Introducing The TILED Method

Ideas don’t build companies.

Understanding does.  Training AI to do brand work forced me to write down fifteen years of instinct.  I call it the TILED Method.

I’m Colē, founder of Build Creatively Inc, a branding and web design agency.

This is the unpacking, how I actually build brands.

Starting with the framework that came out of an unexpected place… teaching AI to do the work.

A few years ago, AI started showing up in client work.  Not as a novelty.  As part of execution.

Content drafts.  Site copy.  Campaign concepts.  The tools were suddenly everywhere, and so was their output.

That’s when the tug of war started.

Every draft came back competent and generic.  Right format, right length, no company in it.  It could write about the business.  It couldn’t write as the business.

And here’s the thing I couldn’t ignore: the tool wasn’t the problem.

The problem was what the tool knew.  Which was nothing.

AI is the newest member of your team.  Smart, fast, tireless, and completely uninformed about your company.  It doesn’t know your customer, your positioning, why you built this, or what about your voice makes it distinctly you.

It knows the average of your entire category.  So that’s what it writes.

I realized I wasn’t fighting the tool.  I was failing to train it.

So I sat down to train it to do what I do.

That meant answering a question I’d never had to make explicit in fifteen years of brand work.  What do I need to know about a company, and in what order, before I can build anything for it?

Not a philosophy.  A sequence.  What comes first.  What question has to be answered before the tagline.  Before the deck.  Before the site.

The sequence has a lineage.  I’ve spent years working with companies across industries, sizes, and growth stages, including years inside the process that pairs startups with investors, watching thousands of pitch decks move through real selection.  You start to see what investors, advisors, and customers all want to see.  What’s the same for every company.  What changes with stage, model, and industry.

You may not be fundraising, but knowing how to pitch your business comes in handy the first time you’re in a room with smart people.

Writing the sequence down, I recognized it.  It was the method I’d been running on instinct the whole time.  AI didn’t teach me branding.  It forced me to make the implicit explicit.

I call it The TILED Method.

Five blocks, in order.

Truth.  The real mechanics of the business you’re building.
Identity.  How it should be understood by everyone else.
Logic.  The numbers behind the story.
Evidence.  The case that it will succeed.
Demand.  The system that turns understanding into revenue.

Truth is the input every other block draws from.  Each produces something you use — a brand guide, a financial model, a pitch deck, a website.  And the order matters, because every output depends on the understanding built before it.

Here’s the part that surprised me.

The structure that makes AI useful is the same structure that makes everything else work.

Because AI isn’t a special case.  It’s just the newest mind your company has to exist in.  The moment you bring anyone into the business, a hire, a freelancer, an investor, a customer, your company stops living only in your head.  Every decision they make is based on what they understand the company to be.

A company is a shared understanding that produces coordinated action.

Train the understanding and everything downstream improves.  The new hire onboards faster.  The freelancer’s first draft sounds like you.  The investor follows the story.  And yes, the AI finally writes like it works there.

Most founders have this backwards.  They’re prompting harder when they should be defining clearer.  The output was never going to be better than the input.  And the input isn’t the prompt.  It’s the company’s intelligence.

If you want to know where you stand, we built a way to check.  The Brand Audit is ten questions.  It scores how well your business is defined, where the foundation is solid, and where it’s still living in your head.  It takes a few minutes.

Take the Brand Audit →

The tools are only getting better.  The companies that win with them won’t be the ones with the best prompts.  They’ll be the ones that are the best understood.
